Perhaps the greatest performance for Maurice Chevalier, and a post-war comeback for him and Rene Clair. They take advantage of Chevalier's aging to paint a poignant portrait of a dandy who has to come to terms with his lifestyle. The beautifully-written story takes place in the world of early silent movie making and the film is salted and peppered with gags and plot twists. Francois Perrier masterfully plays Chevalier's younger disciple. There's also a magnificent reconstruction of life in Paris in the Gay '90s.
