Emmanelle Riva won a Best Actress Award at the Venice Film Festival for her portrayal of a tortured wife in this 1963 French-language adaptation of the novel by Francois Mauriac. Director Georges Franju remains faithful to the book. Riva plays the title character, who feels suffocated in her marriage to the upper-class twit Bernard Desqueyroux (Philippe Noiret). Theirs is a bland marriage in an isolated country mansion surrounded by servants. Therese tries to poison her husband with arsenic, but the dose isn't fatal. She is arrested, but Bernard refuses to press charges, instead bringing her home to a prison of his own devising.

5 of 5 Hard-to-Find Film, VG quality image and subs January 21, 2020

Thérèse lives in a small town in the south of France. Already bored, she marries a wealthy man who is the brother of her best friend, though she feels no love for him. Once married and settled, Thérèse feels stifled in a life of family obligations and concern about family reputation. She is expected to merely be a dutiful wife, and while she may not know what she wants, she does not want THAT. An unsuccessful attempt to poison and kill her husband results in her becoming literally imprisoned in her home and marriage.

Thérèse Desqueyroux is a very good film and one that deserves to be more widely known. As with Franju's "Eyes Without a Face," we see what happens to a character that goes to moral extremes and then must face the consequences, along with the loved ones that are also affected.

Highly recommended.

Plays perfectly! I didn't want to spend $30+ for a low quality region free DVD player to be able to play a French DVD. It came able to play on our region 1 DVD player and with English subtitles, exactly like the description. We paid with PayPal.
