Thanks to movie detective, my hunt for Visconti's all but lost adaptation of Camis' L'etranger has finally come to a satisfying end. A good quality rip, very exciting!

4 of 5 Unusual for Visconti February 15, 2015

The Stranger has been regarded by some as a disappointment among Visconti's films. His usual practise was to engage in a type of interpretive response to the author (Mann, D'Annunzio). Here, he offers a literal, highly respectful adaptation of The Outsider by Camus. Mastroianni's acting is subtle and well-judged. The film captures the novel's atmosphere (nightmarish heat) extremely well. The intense realism is taken so far it seems almost expressionistic at times. One word: compelling.

5 of 5 Unforgettable July 20, 2014

One of Visconti's most gripping dramas;  based on the novel by Camus, the film is also quite Kafkaesque in theme. Mastroianni, as a man who cares little about anything, gives a splendidly calm performance throughout most of the film. The closing seconds are powerful and will stay with you.
