Filmed on the island of Crete and set in the early 1920's, when Greece was occupied by the Turks, Jules Dassin's Celu Qui Doit Mourir (He Who Must Die) tells the story of a small village's efforts to stage their Passion Play, an event that occurs once every seven years. The leading citizens, including the wealthy Patriarcheos (Gert Frobe) and the priest Grigoris (Fernand Ledoux), have managed to keep the local Turkish military ruler (Carl Mohner) satisfied with their quiet subservience, each protecting his status and authority within the community in the process. But when Grigoris makes his selections for the roles in the Passion Play, there are unintended consequences, particularly for Manolios (Pierre Vaneck), a tongue-tied, stammering young shepherd who is chosen to play Jesus.

3 of 5 Jules Dassin June 26, 2019
Reviewer: Doris Katz from Tuckerton, NJ United States
I know that this is an early attempt by Jules Dassin and also an introduction to Melina Mercouri, but I don't think it quite hits the mark of expertise that his later films exhibit. It appears to be hastily concocted and the characters are not sufficiently fleshed out. This is particularly disappointing in the character that Pierre Vanick plays.  He should be pivotal especially since he is supposed to be playing the part of Jesus in a passion play and somehow he is transformed into the character with tragic results. However, we really do not know how the transformation came about.

Kazantzakis has written books about the social and political conditions of his times. This film is a well made version of his novel Christ Recrucified and keeps you enthralled until the end, if you know the history on which it is based.

I first saw this film in the 1970s, when it provoked a lasting interest in the novels of Nikos Kazantsakis. What a pleasure to see it again, in a good, clear print and sound. I am surprised that It isn't more readily available, but thank you for providing this opportunity.
