In German with English subtitles.1956's Captain from Köpenick was the second film version of Der Hauptmann von Köpenick, a play by Carl Zuckmayer (the first was directed by Richard Oswald in 1931). This fact-based seriocomedy stars Heinz Reuhmann as Berlin shoemaker Wilhelm Vogt, who in 1906 finds himself in possession of a Prussian military officer's uniform. Donning the outfit, Vogt struts about posing as a Captain, going so far as to declare martial law on the town of Köpenick, arresting the mayor in the process. Then he commandeers the town's cashbox and heads for the hills--as newspapers all over Germany celebrate his "scam". Helmut Kautner, director of The Captain from Koepenick, appears in a bit part as an organ grinder.

Movie Version Number Four, in Vibrant Color
This 1956 West German film is the fourth cinematic telling of a story based on an event from 1906. It was preceded by 1926 (silent, black & white) and 1931 (sound, black & white) German movies, and by a 1945 (sound, black & white) American movie. The 1956 version offered by Movie Detective was the first of the four to be in color, and as such is visually rewarding, the color cinematography being very vibrant and thus welcome. The last 20 or 30 minutes of the movie, when the plot transitions from main character life frustration to comedy, are excellent. One gets the impression that Germans, in 1906 at least, are (1) too respectful of things military and those who serve militarily, and (2) too inclined proverbially to follow orders...providing an opportunity for parody that culminates in great fun.
