Set at the mouth of a river in Osaka, Japan less than 10 years after WW II, this touching drama centers on the life lessons learned by two disparate young boys. Asahara's parents own a small restaurant. Sakurai is his new friend. He lives with his mother in a houseboat. It doesn't take long for Sakurai and Asahara to become close friends, but the latter is puzzled by Sakurai's unwillingness to talk about his mother and his refusal to allow Asahara to visit his home. Japan's official submission to the 1982's Oscar in the Best Foreign Language Film category.

One of the most moving films I have seen about children and friendship. Just a wonderful film. Don't be put off by it being in black and white, this is in actual fact a real plus. This is a true depiction of Teru Minamoto's wonderful short story "Doro no Kawa" and there is an absence of nostalgia and sentimentality which adds to the film, this is not a "Disney" depiction of childhood. One of my all time favourite films, up there with "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "Cinema Paradiso" The acting is near perfect and the portrayal of the father is one of those momentous moments of an actor nailing the part of an "ordinary" man.
