Originally screened in France as Goupi Mains Rouges, It Happened at the Inn is a quirky little melodrama with the faintest tinges of incest in its makeup. The story takes place in a tiny French village, where everyone seems to be related to everyone else. When a murder occurs at the inn, all the nasty little family secrets come trotting out before the suspects, the law, and the casual bystanders (though there aren't many of those). Oddly, the film is more comic than suspenseful, much like the original Pierre Very novel. While It Happened at the Inn made little impact outside France, the film's domestic returns did wonders for the revitalized career of Jacques Becker, who helmed the picture in 1943 after a year's servitude as a German POW.

A brilliant, cleverly plotted film from the Vichy period by Jacques Becker, who returned to France after 1 year as a POW, and, despite the efforts of the Communist and low life scum who used the war as an excuse to loot the country and shoot Germans in the back in the name of resistance against a Vichy government favored by the majority of the French people, helped give France 5 great cinematic years.

This is an incredible story. It might seem complicated under the direction of anyone else, but Becker handles it with collected authority. It is full of pleasant ironies and clever unexpected doings. Top notch cast to boot. A seriously humorous film directed by a master.
