In Italian with English subtitles.Unlike most Italian films of the 1940s, Augusto Genina's "Cielo Sulla Palude" (Heaven Over the Marshes) opened in Venice rather than Rome. The film's American title was Heaven Over the Marshes, and indeed most of the story is set in the disease-ridden Pontine Marshes on the outskirts of Rome. This was the home of Maria Goretti, a pious young girl who was murdered by her would-be seducer. For reasons elucidated in the course of the film, Maria's short time on earth made her worthy of Sainthood, which was actually bestowed upon her shortly after the release of this film. Maria Goretti is well-played by Ines Orsini. "Cielo Sulla Palude" served as the comeback feature for director Augusto Genina, whose previous pro-fascist films had caused him to be blacklisted after WW II.

1949 Heaven over the Marshes
I never thought I would get my hands on this beautiful film story of Maria Goretti on DVD. I am happy with the print, the sound is also good, and what I love the most is the fact that it has English subtitles. I would not hesitate one moment to shop and buy again from moviedetective.net for very rare or hard to find films.

Hidden masterpiece of Italian neorealism
Three years after it was was released, this film on the life story of the child Saint Maria Goretti played an important role in her canonization by the Catholic Church. But this it's much more than a Catholic film: it's also a strong portrayal of the hard lives of peasant farmers in a terribly harsh environment, that of the marsh lands ridden with the paludal malaria, then existing to the south of Rome... and how a marsh daughter defended virtues severely lacking in today's modern world, which leaded her to death at an early age.I'll finish this commentary mentioning the work of young Ines Orsini who gives Maria the aura of innocence that makes this film so moving.

Met all expectations
The DVD performed perfectly. The picture and sound were clear. The English subtitles were satisfactory. This was my first purchase from Moviedetective.net, and I am happy with the results.
