An underrated gem from Jacques Becker
What’s not to like about this deceptively simple, genuinely funny and heartfelt comedy of matrimonial ups and downs? Annette Wademant’s screenplay sparkles, Becker’s direction is unobtrusive and penetrating in the best tradition of Howard Hawks, and the three leads—Anne Vernon, Louis Jourdan and Daniel Gelin—are superb. Jourdan especially shines, revealing a gift for physical and verbal comedy rarely seen in his high-profile Hollywood films. Terrific black-and-white print and excellent subtitles.
