Douglas Sirk (billed here as Detlef Sierck). Karsten Bernick (Heinrich George) is the wealthy and powerful German consul of a coastal city in Norway. He has devoted himself to one goal: the building of a gigantic shipyard, which he believes will bring prosperity and economic growth to the city. Local fisherman, however, believe the shipyard will endanger their livelihood. While this tension mounts, things are further complicated by the return of Bernick's son in law, who threatens to expose Bernick's darkest secret.
