Next to Senso and The Leopard this one of Visconti's best--and hardest to get a hold of. So glad MD has made it available. Great print, too.

As the website mentions, it's from a VHS source material, but it is at least anamorphic and is the best you'll get at this time.

4 of 5 Italian with Subtitles Beats VHS/YouTube Dubbing January 18, 2017
Reviewer: Chris Kuykendall from Austin, TX United States
The great virtue of the MovieDetective DVD-R is that it contains the original Italian with subtitles, which is a big improvement over the English-dubbed VHS and YouTube versions. By all accounts, the movie is faithful to the Camus novel, which I haven't read. Also, it is set and was filmed in Algiers, which I appreciate because Camus' novel The Plague, which I have read and admire, has only a film adaptation relocated to South America and no adaptation with the same Algerian setting of the book, in Oran. A last comment relates to this movie's release in 1967 and its inclusion of Anna Karina in a supporting role as Marcello Mastroianni's girlfriend. If you like her here, consider MovieDetective's other 1967 Anna Karina DVD-R offering, La Religieuse (The Nun), in which she has an outstanding lead role performance.

Faithful to the book, great acting. Had I not read Gaia Servadio's biography of Luchino Visconti I woul have missed it.

Best
