This French filmization of Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment stars Pierre Blanchar as sociopathic student Raskolnikov and Harry Baur as humanist detective Porfiry. Believing himself intellectually above the law, Raskolnikov kills a despicable old shopkeeper. He is certain that he has no conscience to bother him, but he is eventually forced to confront himself by the kindly but diligent Porfiry.

5 of 5 A beautiful copy of a hard to find classic December 5, 2019
Reviewer: Patrick Hunter from Panorama City, CA United States
Pauline Kael thought this version superior to the acclaimed von Sternberg version (which came out in the U.S. just one week after this one).  It's not because Pierre Blanchard is a better Raskolnikov than Peter Lorre (though I think Blanchard is superb), but because Harry Baur is a better Porfori than Edward Arnold.   It's well worth seeing for those interested in adaptations of this work.
