.In French with English subtitles.Released in France as La Kermesse Heroique, Carnival in Flanders is set during the long-ago war between the Dutch and Spanish. A tiny village in Flanders is invaded by Spanish troops. The townsfolk have heard of Spanish cruelties in other towns, and decide to deflect the vanquishers by playing dead. An award-winner many times over, Carnival in Flanders was banned in Germany; evidently, Goebbels caught on that director Jacques Feyder and scenarists Bernard Zimmer and Charles Spaak were drawing deliberate parallels between the Spanish and the then-burgeoning Nazis.

French classic
Another gem from the golden age of French cinema in the 1930s. Witty screenplay courtesy Charles Spaak and Bernard Zimmer, expert direction by Jacques Feyder, and enchanting performances by Rosay and Jouvet. Excellent print and subtitles.

A Classic
Comedy. Spanish-occupied Flanders, 1616. A mayor promises his daughter to the butcher, rather than to the painter she loves. Meanwhile, a Spanish army signals its approach. The town’s men fear violence and pillaging. The women have ideas how to prevent it. A classic.
