In German with English subtitles. This is a VHS transfer. Also known as 'I was Jack Mortimer'.

Music conductor Monte Mayor knows that his beautiful younger wife, Winifred, is cheating on him with an American named Jack Mortimer. After a concert rehearsal, he takes a taxi to the train station, sees Mortimer and shoots him at an intersection from the backseat of his taxi. The shot is not heard during the traffic noise. The taxi driver, Sponer, sitting in his car with the now-dead Mortimer, goes into a panic. He tells his boss about the incident; but he thinks no one will believe that he is innocent of the murder. He moves the corpse and takes the murdered man's luggage to the deceased's wife, Marie Mortimer, and tells her about the incident, too. He comes up with the idea to play the role of Mortimer himself...

4 of 5 Froelich, or Sagan? January 22, 2015

The two reasons I wanted most to see it were that it was written by Thea von Harbou  - and because the director, Carl Froelich, was also the co-director of one of 1930's Germany's very best films, "Mädchen in Uniform", along with Leontine Sagan. So I wanted to see if I could ascertain who more to credit for their wonderful work in 'Mädchen..." I still don't know, because although this bore a little resemblance to the style of that film, I've yet to see another movie from Leontine Sagan ("Men of Tomorrow", here I come - if I can find you, that is...). Regardless, this is a very fine film and contains wonderful performances all around, especially from the always-great Anton Walbrook and from Sybille Schmitz (most notable from "Färhmann Maria" & "Vampyr"... The former can be found right here, at moviedetective.net and is recommended). "I Was Jack Mortimer" - another fine German film under the occupation and without any 'real' propaganda. Taste it, Goebbels. Taste it.
