Twelve-year-old Johnny Holiday and his friend, Eddie Duggan, have been stealing for Eddie's father who operates a saloon as a front for a fencing operation. On his way home from the saloon, Johnny is followed by two police officers. When Mrs. Bellini, who is looking after Johnny while is mother is in hospital, answers the door, the police frisk Johnny and find evidence bearing the name of a drugstore they robbed. Johnny is arrested and sent to the Indiana Boys' School, a reform school located in Plainfield. As soon as he arrives there, Johnny tries to escape into the nearby woods, but runs right into the arms of Sarge Walker (William Bendix), a former cavalry sergeant who is in charge of the school's farm. Thus begins the battle for Johnny's future, with Walker trying to show Johnny the cleaner side of life, while his fellow reform schoolers try to drag him toward a life of crime. Also with Hoagy Carmichael.

Purchase went smoothly and received in a short amount of time compared to some DVD sites I have dealt with.

Good Leading Role for Bendix
Whether portraying simple family man Chester Riley or beating the bejesus out of poor little Alan Ladd, William Bendix always delivered a memorable performance. He's well-cast here trying to provide a good influence for a juvenile delinquent. Very good film could easily have been maudlin but isn't.

Excellent movie
The movie is realistic. I was in the boy school the movie was filmed at. The cottage the film was filmed in is still there so is the barn. Now they have razer wire fence around the whole grounds. The cemetery is there outside the fence. They closed the boyschool down now its adult facility.

The movie was actually much better than we thought it was going to be. We bought it to see the scene with Hoagy Carmichael where he asks the little boy who is standing next to him to sing. That boy is a friend of mine.
