Dr. Jean Durand (
Claude Dauphin), a gifted scientist, has secured funding for his passion project - a machine which will tell people when they will die - from the wealthy but crooked banker Emil Lasser (
Erich von Stroheim). Lasser intends to save his dwindling fortune by using Durand's invention as the centerpiece of a life insurance scam. Although Durand is in love with Lasser's daughter (
Madeleine Sologne), Durand refuses to coöperate. Still, as Durand's machine becomes more popular with the public, people who know the date of their demise descend into anarchy.
