In Italian with English subtitles. The title translates to
The Siege of the Alcazar.
L'assedio dell'Alcazar is largley pro-fascist propaganda in the guise of popular entertainment and, taken with that grain of salt, it's an interesting film to see today when put in that historical context. Set during the Spanish Civil War, the story dramatizes the 70-day defense of a stone fortification, the Alcazar of Toledo, by Nationalist troops under the command of General Moscardo. While the siege continues, various human dramas play out within the fort's walls as the enemy tightens its grip and tries to destroy the entrenched inhabitants by every means at hand. Somehow or other, Spanish dictator Francisco Franco emerges as the hero of the film, though he was but one of three generals fighting at the Alcazar. Directed by
Augusto Genina, and starring
Mireille Balin.
