In Italian with English subtitles.

Italian filmmaker Giuseppe De Santis followed his internationally acclaimed Bitter Rice with another exercise in neorealism, Non C'e Pace Tra Girl Ulivi (No Peace Under the Oliver Tree). Raf Vallone stars as shepherd Francesco, whose sister is raped by the villain of the piece. Thrown into jail on a trumped-up charge, Francesco escapes, vowing a horrible revenge against the man who framed him and violated his sister.

Between this film and Bitter Rice, Giuseppe De Santis expresses several similarities, my favorites being the villains - here Folco Lulli as Agostino Bonfiglio. De Santis' agents of malfeasance express themselves throughout as more naturally mannered than his heroes and heroines, for whom he demonstrates a keen love, for their nobility, their suffering, though, occasionally transforming their natural qualities into overly grand, wooden posturing. The shephards and their marked flocks are the moving face of a harsh, rock-ridden land, the women of the town the observant, moral eye, the missteps of each leading to the turmoil at the story center. Raf Vallone is solid in his role, quite different from his character in Bitter Rice - he has range (see also the film Anna); Maria Grazia Francia's conflicted character as his sister is regrettably underused; Dante Maggio as his fellow escapee contributes an engaging lightheartedness; and Lucia Bosé, her acting chops here were not appreciable.

Excellent film, once you accept Lucia Bose as the most elegant peasant woman ever.  Beautiful print.
