Smith's first
Expertly written and directed drama about a con man who runs out of luck. Good performances by Maggie Smith (her first movie) and George Nader (who has a fascinating backstory). Recommended.

an unsung, little-known film noir gem
This taut, tightly paced, atmospheric British crime drama deserves to be on every film noir fan's "best of" list! Former Hollywood hunk actor George Nader has the role of his life here, portraying the doomed anti-hero with quiet finesse and manly grace. And seeing a 23-yr-old Maggie Smith as leading lady is a delight! Incisive photography and sharp bebop jazz score top off a winner!
