Description

This is a region-free DVD-R without case or artwork.

In Italian with English subtitles. The title translates to Bread, Love and Dreams.

Directed by Luigi Comencini. Vittorio De Sica plays the middle-aged marshal of carabiniere in a remote Italian mountain village. He's anxious to marry, and selects young Gina Lollobrigida as his bride; but she is already in love with De Sica's shy subordinate Roberto Risso. Mistaking her headstrong behavior as promiscuity, De Sica makes advances towards her, but she spurns him. Forsaking the girl to the arms of Risso, De Sica decides to settle for village midwife Marisa Merlini. A huge box-office hit, Pane, Amore, e Fantasia contains what some regard as Gina Lollobrigida's best and most naturalistic performance, and was followed by a sequel, Pane, Amore e Gelosia in 1954).

The DVD-R functions perfectly. The sound and image are clear, the subtitles are good and well-synchronized. (The sound might be a bit out of sync with the movement of the actors' lips, but that may be an artifact of the original.) The ordering process was simple. I paid a bit extra for first-class mail, and received accurate tracking info.

Much appreciated!  Pane, Amore, e Fantasia is a great movie that is hard to find with good subtitles.

Previously only available in poorly dubbed versions. In Italian, with astute English subtitles, this startlingly clear print is a revelation. Lollobrigida's comic gift is much in evidence but Comencini has given us more than just a romp. Sometimes scathing in its analysis of regional poverty it really isn't that far from the high minded neo realism which preceded it.
And thanks again for such a speedy service.
