Characteristically breaking with tradition, director Robert Bresson presents a realistic, unique view of the life and death of Joan of Arc. Using a script based on the actual transcript notes taken during her trial, Bresson focuses on the psychological and physical torture that Joan had to endure, showing how these techniques were used to break her resolve and cause her to eventually recant her faith. With impeccable historical accuracy Bresson re-creates the story of the peasant girl who, after leading an unsuccessful revolt against the government, was brought to trial, convicted of heresy, and burned as a witch. However, Bresson shows Joan (Florence Carrez) as a woman more sophisticated and calculating and less naive than she has normally been represented. His Joan, while more real, is no less heroic than the traditional Joan. This unusual approach is characteristic of this unique director who defies classification as either a traditional or "new wave" filmmaker while being highly respected for pursuing his own individual style and vision.

Excellent DVD, no glitches. Speedy service. A very valuable site for hard to find movies. Much cheapER, BY AND LARGE, THAN ANYTHING I HAVE FOUND ON EBAY.

5 of 5 The Trial of Joan of Arc September 12, 2019
Reviewer: Robert Avrech from Los Angeles, CA United States
I normally don't like art movies, but there is something hypnotic about Bresson's treatment of Joan. I like the simplicity, the spare use of the actual language of the trial. This would make a great double bill with Dreyer's Passion of Joan of Arc, which treats the same story in a far more baroque manner. Both are great films.

5 of 5 Great all around December 19, 2018

I've been waiting forever for Bresson's Joan of Arc movie to get a DVD release.  I decided to go with Movie Detective's bare-bones version because their prints are always clean and subtitles wonderfully legible.  You did not disappoint.  MD is a quality merchant and provides real services for the cinephile.

5 of 5 A work of art November 29, 2018
Reviewer: Patrick Hunter from Panorama City, CA United States
Bresson's version of this oft-filmed trial might be the best, in that the director avoids any theological or idealistic viewpoint.  The dialog comes verbatim from the court minutes, and they're riveting enough.   A great companion to Dreyer's La passion du jeanne d'arc.
