Emilio (Anthony Franciosa) is caught in the midst of a heavy-duty mid-life crisis when he runs into sexy Angiolina (Claudia Cardinale), voluptuous and frivolous in equal measure. In spite of good advice from his friends and family, including his sister Amalia (Betsy Blair), Emilio pursues the gorgeous Angiolina with single-minded dedication. He is incredibly unaware that she is as unconcerned as he is committed, and by not reading the obvious warning signs he heads toward a big fall.

In the early Sixties Anthony Franciosa was usually cast as the carefree playboy, but in Bolognini's masterful film Careless he plays against type as a neurotic, insecure insurance clerk. Claudia Cardinale is the object of his desire (in a Louise Brooks-style wig to let us know this takes place in the Roaring Twenties), and ultimately his obsessive jealousy when he learns she's not what he assumes   her to be. They both turn in outstanding performances, but Betsy Blair steals the show as Franciosa's spinster sister, slowly unraveling into insanity as the film goes on. Her haunting performance stays with you long after the film ends.

A moody film, superbly shot in Trieste, which is used to great effect in this somber exploration of the relationship between two very different people. Direction of actors is also excellent here, Claudia Cardinale's performance particularly memorable.  Thanks MovieDetective, once again.
