California millionaire Frederic Summers (Peter Lawford) hires private investigator Alan Macklin (George Maharis) to uncover the mysterious past of his fiancée, Sylvia West, a cultured, well-to-do author of a book of poetry. An English professor friend of Macklin deduces from her poetry that Sylvia is from Pittsburgh.
