Directed by Claude Chabrol. Paul Wagner (Maurice Ronet) has inherited a successful champagne business, but seems to have little interest in either commerce or social etiquette. Some time ago, Paul suffered a severe head injury and, despite extensive treatment, still shows signs of mental disorder. His cousin Christine (Yvonne Furneaux) is determined to sell out to some American buyers, but Paul refuses to hand over his stake in the company. Hearing that Paul will be staying in Hamburg shortly, Christine appeals to her husband, Christopher (Anthony Perkins), to try to win Paul round to her way of thinking. In Hamburg, Paul spends an evening with a prostitute, Paula, who is found dead the following morning. Unable to recall whether he killed Paula or not, Paul returns to France, but the nightmare is far from over...

5 of 5 Terrific March 4, 2020

This is the best murder mystery whodunit I have ever seen.Terrific dialogue.Terrific performances by Maurice Ronet and Anthony Perkins.Terrific plot surprises. Some interesting Claude Chabrol directorial touches:there is party scene in which a middle aged woman confronts Anthony Perkins recalling the places where he formerly made his living as a gigolo.Amusingly the background scene changes  from an objective to a subjective one.Everyone is staring at Anthony Perkins. Not in actuality of course.Just a representation of Perkins' guilty conciousness. There are other very humorous bits in the film as well.Usually Claude Chabrol's films are more esoteric, not as good as this one. This is the best Claude Chabrol film I have ever seen. It's amazing how many great French films Anthony Perkins made that are virtually unknown in the USA.'Someone Behind the Door'with Charles Bronson and 'Le Glave et La Balance'with Jean Claude Brialy and Renato Salvatori are both brilliant films.
