Description

This is a region-free DVD-R without case or artwork.

The first screen adaptation one of Dashiell Hammett's best novels, The Glass Key is a lively and straightforward drama of political corruption and urban intrigue. George Raft plays Ed Beaumont, the right-hand man to genial ward heeler Paul Madvig (Edward Arnold), who wants to clean up his political act. On the eve of a major election, Madvig is implicated in a murder, and it's up to Beaumont to help him out. Intimately involved in the case is Janet Henry (Claire Dodd), the sister of the murdered man and the daughter of "above reproach" Senator Henry (Charles Richman). Though no babe-in-the-woods, Beaumont is in for quite a few disillusionments as he pursues his investigation, though he does rather better romantically than the redoubtable Madvig.

4 of 5 Hard to Find March 18, 2015
Reviewer: MW from Westlake Village, CA United States
Nice copy of this hard-to-find original George Raft version of the later somewhat better Ladd-Lake-Donlevy-Bendix noir favorite.

Not pristine like Universal remasters of Paramount Classics but acceptable.  And that is a quibble when a highly desired movie like this is officially kept out of circulation.  Kudos to MovieDetective for making the purchase affordable and sending it out when promised.  A++++ for providing great service at a good price.

3 of 5 THE GLASS KEY April 7, 2014
Reviewer: JAMES MORRELLA from YONKERS, NY United States
This was the first effort to bring Dashiel Hamment's mystery to the screen. It is not as well done as the subsequent remake with Alan Ladd. Both George Raft and Edward Arnold do a great job, but the supporting characters are no where as good as the remake.
