Widescreen. The film begins with the breakup of a family following the 1956 uprising - the father flees Budapest for Paris, leaving the rest of the family behind. Seven years later, the film follows the struggles of the boys, now teenagers, to find their way and probes the pain of living in the shadow of 1956 with touches of 'pathos and bathos and snatches of rock 'n roll'. The film was awarded the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Director at the Tokyo International Film Festival.
