Giuseppe De Santis was the creative force behind this Yugoslavian "slice of life" drama. As the title suggests, the plot concerns a joint, voluntary effort between Italy and Yugoslavia to construct a highway along the countries' borders. Naturally, this animosity wreaks havoc on the various Romeo-Juliet romances in the region, and locals feud over where the road will go, and who will build it. With

Massimo Girotti. The film was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 31st Academy Awards in April 1959, and Girotti was awarded best actor at the San Francisco International Film Festival.
