This is a region-free DVD-R without case or artwork. In German with English subtitles.Unter den Bruecken (Under the Bridge) was German filmmaker Helmut Kautner's final film under the aegis of the Third Reich. Heavily influenced by such prewar French directors as Vigo and Carne, the film is set amongst the barge workers of the River Havel. Refreshingly free of political propaganda, the story concentrates on a romance between a bargee (Carl Raddatz) and a waterfront lass (Hannelore Schrott). Unter den Bruecken was given its premiere in Stockholm in late 1946, then totally disappeared from view. Rediscovered some 30 years later, the film was hailed by critics as a sensitive depiction of old-world sentimentality at odds with the harshness of modern reality.

friendship and romance on a barge
After watching two of his pictures (both with Bridge in the title) every Helmut Kautner movie is going in my wishlist. Thanks Movie Det for making this special film (and others from the director) available.

Super movie! Thought of Vigo's L' Atalante..
First the film: This movie is a gem. After viewing I immediately thought of Jean Vigo's film L'Alalante. Sight and Sound's top 1000 movies rated L'Atalante at number 17. After viewing Under the Bridges I would rate this film much higher than the number 980 position on Sight and Sound's list.I thank Movie Detective for providing this film and their rapid order shipping. Great movie
I don't subscribe to the 1 masterpiece for any given director theory. Helmut Kautner has several masterpieces. This is among them. Watch two minutes of nearly any Kautner film and his mastery is apparent. Truly, one of the sadly under appreciated directors of the 20th century. Great print.
